Club competition

There's going to be a club competition held on the morning of Sunday 14th June! This is the Sunday starting 8th week.

There will be 2 prizes available, to club members, for the top two wilks scores.
(Squad members not included)

So far several club members and three squad members (Luke, Adam, Me) have already displayed intent to compete and I anticipate many more. So that i can gauge the expected turnout; please email me at karl.seddon@seh.ox.ac.uk if you intend to compete, regardless of whether you've told me already in a club session.

Rules will be explained on the day but bear in mind that benches are paused. For those who are aiming to test their maxes soon, this is the perfect oppurtunity to gain competition experience and to get the most out of each attempt.

This day will also be the day that club records begin!!! There will be a top ten in the Squat, Bench, Deadlift and Wilks total.

The Squat, Bench and Deadlift will be in absolute poundage so if you're small and weak (like me) then tough luck. However wilks score takes bodyweight into account and this will be done for total only (not individual lifts).

I know that the bench record is being fiercely chased after in the gym by certain members so if you think you have **THE BIGGEST BENCH** in OUPLC then this is the time to prove it!!!

Weigh-in will probably be the standard 1-2 hours before lifting begins but this is to be confirmed.

Summary-

When: Sunday 14th June
Where: Iffley Powerlifting Room
Why:
-Two prizes up for grabs for top two club members!!!!!!!! (tub of creatine each)
-Club records begin!!!!!!!

If you want to compete please email me at karl.seddon@seh.ox.ac.uk

Trinity Term

1. BDFPA NATIONALS RESULTS
2. CLUB SESSIONS - TRINITY 2009
3. SQUAD SESSIONS - TRINITY 2009
4. AGM 2008-9
5. PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2008-9

1. BDFPA NATIONALS RESULTS

As I'm sure you're all aware, the BDFPA Nationals took place this weekend, and apparently OUPLC rocked the place!  Attached are the results in pdf format.  Congratulations to all who attended!

2. CLUB SESSIONS - TRINITY 2009

Club sessions will be resuming this Wednesday, April 22.  As per usual, squats and benches will be trained on Wednesday at 6:30PM and deadlifts and benches on Sunday at 11AM.  I'd like to encourage all club members to make a point to attend these sessions.  The numbers have been down lately, and it is key that club members hone their technique in these sessions.

3. SQUAD SESSIONS - TRINITY 2009

Squad sessions will be resuming today, Monday, April 20 at the usual times.  As most everyone is back in Oxford now, it is essential that Group 1 and Group 2 members resume training at their normal times (5:30 and 7PM, respectively), despite the more lax holiday training times.  Those who have attended BDFPA Nationals this weekend should probably take today off, or at the most do some light assistance and cardio.

Please note that training times are strict and not simply suggestions.  I expect everyone to be ready to take a bar out of the racks at 5:30PM sharp or 7PM sharp, not at 5:45 or 7:15.

4. AGM 2008-9

The OUPLC AGM (Annual General Meeting) will be held this term.  The date will be announced shortly, following a committee meeting, but ALL CLUB/SQUAD MEMBERS please be on the lookout for this.  The AGM is the meeting at which next year's committee are elected, and the running of the club over the last year is discussed and suggestions are made for the following year.  For example, at the last AGM we discussed some of the issues concerning the club/squad split that we followed this year.  If you'd like to have your say or would like to run for a committee position, please be sure to attend.

The committee positions available include:

President
Secretary
Treasurer
Social Rep
IT Rep
Team Manager(s)

Team captains will be chosen by the committee and squad later.

5. PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2008-9

As a Blues Club at Oxford, OUPLC is obliged to submit a president's report each year which summarizes the major achievements of the club over the last year.  Such reports are key in evaluating the club for future funding and the material in these reports can be presented at the Blues Meetings when applying for Blues Status Upgrades.  To assist me in writing this year's report, can each active squad/club member send me a brief email listing competitions that they have attended, their placing, and so forth.  Please include in the subject line for these emails "PRESIDENT'S PACK INFO" so that I can sort through them accordingly.

Varsity 2009 Results!

Varsity 2009 - Oxford  [Update - Video is now available]

In short, it was a great day for all involved!

This really was a phenomenal performance.  Dan Koffler hit a huge 376 wilks, just missing a big 270 pull.  Daniele Selmi was on fire yesterday, making his third deadlift of 270 look like an opener, while putting up solid squats and benches.  Robin trailed by a mere 0.7 point, hitting a big 525 total at 75kg, with a particuarly big squat of 177.5kg, approaching 3xbwt now.

Big Karl Seddon hit some solid numbers across the board, with a big 160 squat and 95 bench, as well as a 200 pull giving him a wilks score of 373.6.  Scott (the Red Baron) McLaughlan impressed everyone with a big 225 pull and 132 bench.  Matt Jones had an all-around solid day, making every lift look like an opener.  In particuarly, putting up a massive 240 dead lift and 142 bench, as well as a 200 squat.

Tristan (T-Dawg) Gray-Davies was an animal yesterday, slamming through a 180-/125/220 for easy PRs across the board.  Rob Pearce had a great day also, slamming through a particuarly nice 240 dead lift at 85kg bwt.

And last, but certainly not least, Adam ("no-pec") Sandel gave his all even though he wasn't able to bench press!

The final scores were:

OUPLC 1147.38 WPTS
CUPLC 1108.00 WPTS

Attempts were well-chosen and little weight was left on the platform.  CUPLC fielded a solid team, and the food and drinks afterwards were jovial and enjoyed by all.

In particular, I want to thank Charlie and Alasdair for managing the OUPLC team, and Tiffany and Jacob for running the meet so well.  Thank you Kate for running the camera, and Evren, Juan, Arash, David, and Simon for spotting and loading.  (If I've missed anyone, please accept my apology).

This meet came together very well, despite last-minute changes in the venue and scrambling to get equipment.  We put off a professional meet, which I think equals or betters any IPF or BDFPA meet at the local or regional level that I've seen.  Next year, we'll make this thing official with IPF sanctioning and really push things up a notch.

OUPLC has come a long way in the last year.  We've come from a smattering of guys who casually work out to a highly cohesive unit of National-caliber powerlifters.  This year, we've gone to BUCS/BUSA and smashed the competition.  After a near loss at the Oxbridge Varsity match last year, we've come back to dominate Cambridge.  We have a number of squad and club lifters who are attending the IPF/BDFPA nationals this year, some of whom may even go to the IPF or BDFPA worlds.  As a club and a team, we have come together at meets.  Smacking each other, cheering for each other, roaring with emotion as one solid group.

Now, before we get too proud of ourselves, let's get to back to it.  We've got some serious lifting to do between now and the Nationals.

Varsity 2009

The Powerlifting Varsity Match will be taking place this Sunday, March 8, at 11AM at the OURFC gym in North Hinksley.  It is generously being hosted by Oxford Powersports (www.oxfordpowersports.com).

Weigh-in will take place at 9:30AM sharp, and lifting will commence at 11AM.

The gym can be found with the following map:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=OX2+0NA&ie=UTF8&z=16

It is about a 10-15min drive down the Botley Road, so it is likely about a 30min cycle or 10GBP cab.

For all those individuals who are helping run the meet, and are competing (namely the squad + helpers), Matthew Llewlyn-Jones is arranging rides to the venue.  Please contact him directly (bob312438772@hotmail.com).

CUPLC is fielding 8 competitors, while OUPLC is fielding 10.  Given how successful the club has been both in the gym and at local competitions, the CUPLC boys had better be ready to battle.

If you haven't already done so, and would like to help run the meet (in particular, we need a camera man/woman), please contact Matt directly (and as soon as possible).

Admission will be free.

Daniele is also arranging a post-meet celebration, and his email will follow shortly as to the venue and time.

BDFPA West Midland - Post meet

To everyone who competed this Sunday, what can I say? Well done! You're a credit to yourselves, and OUPLC (a very experienced & well-respected lifter was so impressed with OUPLC that he went out of his way to tell me).

A BIG thank you to Luke Pike, for devoting all his time and energy to each and every one of us throughout the day -- Luke, none of us would have achieved what we did without your support -- thank you!

Everyone did really well, but there were many notable attempts, including Dan Koffler & Karl's monstrous squat, Charlie's crazy bench (and 9/9!), Tan (9/9), Tristan & Matt L-Js big PR deadlift, Tiffany's 9/9 and close-to-PR total (despite only getting back into powerlifting in the past few months (!)), Adam Sandel blowing away his previous PRs (especially well done dude), Scott's big total and awesome bench and Rob Pierce's especially impressive deadlift.

This meet had the largest turnout of any Divisional I have ever seen (50-something lifters).  And even given the large number of experienced lifters, several of our guys placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their weight classes, OVERALL.  Fantastic job everyone.

The Cambridge boys are in for a world of hurt.

Welcome back

Welcome back everyone!  I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays home or abroad and I trust that you all got some good training and lots of turkey in during the break! ;)

Sportsman of the Year award -- Daniele Selmi

Congratulations to our ex-president, Daniele for winning the prestigious 2008 Oxford University Sportsman of the Year. His contributions has helped establish our club and propelled our recognition to both county and national levels. A well deserved award, well done!

BUSA 2008 results -- UPDATED

The video of BUSA competition has been uploaded. It's a rough cut with all the lifts included, so it's pretty long (29 minutes).

[UPDATE: Video]

Well, it was FANTASTIC!

Well done to everyone who competed. I must admit that when I realized
how cold the venue was, a little voice in my head went 'I'm glad I'm
not lifting today!'  That sports hall was about 10 degrees C so I
won't be surprised if quite a few of you have pretty sore muscles this
morning.

How did we do? Well:

- best unequipped lifted lifter in the 67.5 class in the form of the
beast that is Karl Seddon. As a little side note, he also took the
British squat record on his way. Well done Karl!

- on the 75 class - Robin, our newest member, just dominated this group
winning by something silly like 50-60 wilks points (correct me if it
was actually more than that mate!). I know he is ever so slightly
disappointed with his 3rd pull but you can't complain if you win your
class with a pb total. Some carefully selected weights by yours truly
(ahem) and an awesome performance by another new boy with plenty of
potential, Adam Sandel, gave him a very well deserved 2nd in this
class.

- 82.5 boys: 1st, 2nd and 3rd places went to OUPLC here! (and before
any smart ass says 'out of three?' there were actually over 10 people
in this weight class). Dan Selmi, ex-club captain (and sportsman of the
year btw), won this class with a very professional performance (even
though I am starting to deadlift about as much as he is!). Dan seems to
be an expert at pitching his attempts. He eeks every 2.5kg out of his
lifts and leaves very little weight on the platform especially with the
squats and benches. Scott (monster bencher) came second with a great
comp and Tristan got third place. I was watching Tristan squat from the
warm-up area and boy can this guy squat! Part of me really wants to put
some wraps and a suit on him and see what he's capable of.
Jacob put in a great performance. His points unfortunately did not
count towards team points but if they did, he would've been right in
there with a medal.

Alisdair, our resisdant librarian/powerhouse, lifted in this class too.
After a token squat due to injury, he achieved what he wanted out of
the bench and deads.

There were no 90 and 100 lifters from ouplc.

On to the 110s and what can I say. This guy truly deserves praise.
Truly dedicated to the sport and to ouplc, Luke Pike put in a
gruesomely long day yesterday.  He spent his entire morning
coaching/ loading and helping out in the warm-up room and didn't start
lifting till well after 3. He was not only helping OUPLC lifters but at
one stage started dishing out advice to some random newbie who looked
totally lost. He won his class and made us really sweat with his 3rd
deadlift after an unlucky first two attempts. He also got 2nd best
unequipped lifter overall across the weight classes. Well done!

Although as yet unofficial, it looks like we won best university team.
Plenty of trophies and medals to bring home and yet more justification
for support from SportsFed and Oxford Blue.
